Svetitskhoveli Cathedral

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is a major medieval Georgian Orthodox cathedral located in the town of Mtskheta, in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region. The present cathedral dates to the 11th century and is central to Georgia’s ecclesiastical history.

The building is notable for its large stone construction, domed roof and extensive interior fresco cycles and ecclesiastical furnishings. Pilgrims and visitors come to see the architecture, the relics associated with the cathedral and its role as a functioning church.

The cathedral’s current structure was completed in the early 11th century on a site used for Christian worship since the early medieval period; it has been the seat of important religious ceremonies and royal coronations over centuries. It has undergone conservation and restoration work to preserve frescoes and masonry.

Svetitskhoveli stands in the ancient town of Mtskheta, north of the capital Tbilisi, at the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers and within Georgia’s historical heartland.
