Sutjeska National Park is a protected mountain park in southeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina covering high peaks, deep river valleys and old-growth forest. It is one of the country’s principal national parks and conservation areas.

The park contains steep alpine terrain, long-distance hiking routes and significant natural landmarks such as primeval forest tracts and high summits. Outdoor activities include hiking, mountaineering and guided visits to natural and historical sites.

The area saw major wartime events in 1943 during the Battle of Sutjeska; it was later set aside for conservation and national park status in the mid-20th century to protect its unique natural values, including ancient forest stands.

Sutjeska National Park lies in the southeastern interior of Bosnia and Herzegovina within Republika Srpska, encompassing mountainous terrain and river valleys; the Tjentište area serves as the principal visitor access point.

  • Perućica access: Perućica contains very old beech and spruce stands with steep access trails; visiting requires prepared footwear and mountain experience for longer routes.
  • Visitor gateway: Tjentište hosts the main visitor facilities and memorials related to the World War II Battle of Sutjeska, acting as the park's common entry point.

What to See #

  • Perućica primeval forest: Perućica primeval forest is a protected pocket of old-growth temperate rainforest within the park, one of the few remaining in Europe and accessible by marked trails.
  • Mount Maglić: Mount Maglić reaches the park's highest point at about 2,386 metres and is a focal summit for mountaineers and long alpine routes.
  • Tjentište valley and memorials: Tjentište valley contains memorials and museums commemorating the 1943 Battle of Sutjeska and is the park's principal visitor gateway.
