Susak
Island Small sand-covered Adriatic island with distinctive culture
A small Croatian island noted for its sandy deposits and low, compact town; visitors arrive by ferry for quiet beaches, local festivals and to explore the island’s narrow lanes on foot.
Susak is a small Croatian island in the northern Adriatic, part of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, known locally for its sandy soil and distinctive local dialect and costume. The island is compact, with a single main settlement clustered near the island’s harbour.
The shoreline features low sandy beaches rather than the typical rocky coasts of the region, and the island’s small scale makes it popular with visitors seeking quiet beaches and traditional island life. Access is by ferry or private boat from nearby larger islands and coastal towns.
Historically the island supported a larger permanent population and experienced waves of emigration; today it has a small year-round population with seasonal increases in summer.
Susak lies in the Kvarner Bay area of the Adriatic, among the islands off the Croatian coast near Lošinj and Unije, reachable by regular local ferry connections.
- Sandy island: Noted for its atypically sandy soil and beaches, which are rare among Croatian Adriatic islands.
How to Get to Susak #
Susak is an island with no bridge access-reach it by passenger ferry or private boat. There is no airport on Susak.
Tips for Visiting Susak #
- Check ferry and boat schedules before you go - Susak is served irregularly outside high summer and connections from Rijeka or nearby islands are limited, so plan arrivals and departures carefully.
- Bring cash and basic supplies when you arrive; the island's shops and services are limited and card acceptance can be unreliable.
- Spend time walking the interior and traditional village streets away from the main beaches - the island's sandy stretches get crowded in peak season, while inland areas show local architecture and quieter scenes.
Best Time to Visit Susak #
Visit Susak in late spring to early autumn for warm sea conditions, with May and September offering good weather and fewer crowds than July-August.
