Susa
Historical Site Ancient Elamite and Persian city ruins with monumental remains
Ancient Susa (Shush) preserves millennia of settlement: Elamite, Achaemenid and later remains, with excavated tells and a local museum. Visitors explore ruins and artifacts tied to Mesopotamian history.
Susa is an ancient city in Khuzestan province, southwestern Iran, with archaeological remains spanning several millennia. It was an important urban and administrative centre in Elamite and later Persian periods.
Excavated mounds and exposed foundations reveal successive building phases, including large plan forms of palaces and administrative complexes, tell mounds that mark long occupation, and remains visible at ground level and in trenches. The site presents layered architectural remains rather than a single intact monumental complex.
Susa was founded in the 4th millennium BCE and served as a capital and cultural centre for Elamite states and later as an important city within the Achaemenid Persian Empire. The site has been subject to archaeological investigation since the 19th century, which uncovered major structural remains and artifacts spanning its long history.
The archaeological site lies in Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran near the modern town of Shush (ancient Shushan), within an alluvial plain historically linked to important Mesopotamian and Iranian centres.
- Long occupation: The site has evidence of occupation from the 4th millennium BCE through successive Elamite, Persian and later periods, making it one of the ancient Near East's long-lived urban centres.
What to See #
- Acropolis and palace mounds: The main archaeological tells and palace mounds forming the ancient core of the city, containing multi-layered remains from Elamite, Achaemenid and later occupations. Excavation trenches reveal mud-brick walls, monumental foundations and administrative complexes.
- Achaemenid remains: Achaemenid-period constructions and administrative remains reflecting the city's function under Persian rule, including palace foundations and companion structures. These attest to Susa's role as a regional administrative centre.
