Coastal Lowlands (Paramaribo, Wanica, Commewijne, Albina)

The build-up to the major wet season becomes noticeable in April as humidity rises and showers grow more frequent; Paramaribo’s trees look glossy and green. River and coastal services remain running, but expect more afternoons with heavy rain that can briefly flood low streets in the capital; pack waterproof footwear. Boat trips for river dolphins or Commewijne plantation tours can be scenic between squalls, though some smaller operators begin to reduce schedules. If you dislike mud and interrupted travel, start avoiding long interior overland transfers from mid-April.

Western Rice Belt & Bigi Pan Wetlands (Nickerie, Nieuw-Nickerie, Bigi Pan)

April is when the long wet season becomes noticeable on the western coast: heavy rains can soak fields and intermittently affect small roads, but the landscape is strikingly verdant. Bigi Pan’s channels deepen and boat-based birding is productive, though low-lying coastal tracks may be waterlogged after prolonged storms. For open-air activities you’ll need waterproof clothing and flexible plans; local guides are used to schedule changes but inland dirt tracks are best avoided after major downpours. Fishing and market life continue regardless of the weather.

Central Rainforest & Brokopondo (Brokopondo Reservoir, Brownsberg, Raleighvallen)

April is squarely in the long rainy season for the interior; frequent torrential showers make trails challenging but turn small streams into lively cascades - the sound of thundering water is constant. Boat travel is generally easier because rivers are high, but unpaved roads to lodges can be impassable at times; flights to remote airstrips are sometimes postponed during heavy storms. For jungle camping or long hikes you’ll need robust waterproof gear, insect protection and a flexible schedule. Expect fewer other tourists and deeper green scenery.

Southern Highlands & Sipaliwini (Tafelberg, Julianatop, Sipaliwini Savanna)

April is into the main wet season for much of the interior highlands; persistent showers and cloud reduce visibility from high plateaus but make waterfalls and ephemeral streams spectacular. Flights to remote mountain airstrips are frequently weather-dependent and some trekking routes are sometimes closed after heavy storms; local operators will advise on safest options. The advantage is fewer visitors and flourishing flora: orchids and ephemeral flowers come into bloom. For comfort, bring breathable rainwear and extra fuel for mosquito repellent use.
