The Superstition Mountains are a rugged mountain range east of the Phoenix metropolitan area in central Arizona, noted for steep canyons, volcanic rock formations, and strong ties to regional folklore. Much of the range lies within the Superstition Wilderness of the Tonto National Forest.
Hikers and climbers use numerous maintained and unmaintained trails to access features such as the volcanic spire known as Weaver’s Needle and multiple canyon routes; many popular hikes are day trips from the Phoenix area. Recreational opportunities include day hiking, technical climbing, and backcountry camping, with trailheads concentrated around Lost Dutchman State Park and other access points.
The area has long been part of the traditional lands of regional Indigenous peoples and later saw prospecting and mining activity in the 19th century. The range’s notoriety rose with the spread of the Lost Dutchman mine legend; federal protection of much of the area as designated wilderness followed in the 20th century.
The Superstition Mountains sit east of Phoenix in central Arizona, immediately north and east of the town of Apache Junction and within the Tonto National Forest. They form a distinct skyline visible from parts of the metropolitan area.

How to Get to Superstition Mountains #
The Superstition Mountains are accessed from Apache Junction and the Tonto National Forest. From Phoenix, drive east on US-60 to Apache Junction and follow local signs to trailheads such as Siphon Draw (often reached via Peralta Road/Prospector Trail). Some trails require a short dirt-road approach-high-clearance vehicles are recommended for certain trailheads.

- Avoid the Apache Junction trailheads on holiday weekends-weekend crowds are heavy and parking fills early.
- Bring plenty of water and a map: temperatures can spike and cell reception is unreliable away from trailheads.
