Sunset Crater
Crater Cinder cone volcano within Sunset Crater National Monument
Sunset Crater in northern Arizona features a cinder cone, lava fields and marked trails. Geo‑enthusiasts and hikers study recent Holocene eruptions and walk short interpretive routes.
Sunset Crater is a volcanic cinder cone on the Colorado Plateau in northern Arizona, part of the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. The cone and associated lava flows formed during volcanic activity in the region in the late first millennium to early second millennium CE.
The landscape offers stark volcanic features - the cinder cone, extensive lava flows and scattered volcanic vents - that can be explored on short interpretive walks. Key points of interest include the Bonito Lava Flow and overlooks with views across the surrounding painted desert and ponderosa pine forests. The monument has paved viewpoints and maintained trails but climbing the cone itself is not permitted to protect fragile surfaces.
The eruption that produced the cone and flows noticeably altered local terrain and soils; over centuries vegetation has colonised much of the basalt. The monument was established to protect the volcanic landscape and to allow scientific study and public interpretation of recent volcanism on the plateau.
Sunset Crater lies north of Flagstaff, Arizona, on the high-elevation volcanic plateau; it is reached via roads from Flagstaff and sits within a landscape of mixed forest and other volcanic landforms.
- Visitor note: Many short trails and overlooks provide views of the cone and the surrounding lava fields; the monument is adjacent to other national parks and cultural sites, so combine visits where possible.
- Access restrictions: Climbing the crater is prohibited and some trails may be seasonally closed for restoration or safety; check the park's current access rules before visiting.
What to See #
- Bonito Lava Flow: The Bonito Lava Flow is a large basaltic lava field extending from the base of Sunset Crater; it is marked by jagged pahoehoe and a'a textures and accessible from short interpretive trails.
- Sunset Crater cinder cone: Sunset Crater itself is a prominent cinder cone rising above the surrounding plain; the cone and immediate area are protected and climbing the crater is restricted to protect fragile soils.
How to Get to Sunset Crater #
From Flagstaff, take US-89 north for about 15 miles to Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument; the park lies just east of US-89 on Sunset Crater Road/Forest Service access. A short, paved Loop Road off the park entrance takes visitors past the main viewpoints and trailheads; many visitors drive the loop and then pick one trail to hike. The nearest major airport is Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (about 20-25 miles); Phoenix Sky Harbor is about 140 miles south.
Tips for Visiting Sunset Crater #
- Begin at the visitor center (check seasonal hours) to get the free map - trails diverge and signage is minimal.
- Drive the 8-mile Loop Road for quick views, then hike the Lenox Crater or Lava Flow trails to feel the scale of the lava fields.
- Bring layers: high desert sun can be strong but wind and cooler evenings are common; shade is scarce on trails.
- If aiming for photos, late afternoon light softens the black cinder against the pines.
- Combine with a visit to Wupatki National Monument (same pass) to see Pueblo ruins and contrast human history with volcanic disruption.
Best Time to Visit Sunset Crater #
Best visited spring through fall for accessible trails and mild weather; check visitor center for seasonal closures.
