Sungbo's Eredo
Archaeological Site Extensive ancient earthworks and walls in Lagos
An extensive system of earthworks near the Ijebu area, Sungbo’s Eredo comprises long walls and ditches built centuries ago; archaeologists and visitors come to study its scale and historical context.
Sungbo’s Eredo is a large system of earthworks in southwestern Nigeria associated with the historic Ijebu area. It consists of banks and ditches that form linear and enclosing features across the landscape and is notable for its scale among African earthworks.
The site is marked by continuous or segmented earthen ramparts and deep ditches that can be walked in places and observed from nearby roads or higher ground. The visible remains form long stretches of embankment and trenching that outline former boundaries or defensive lines.
The earthworks are pre-colonial in origin and are traditionally connected to the Ijebu kingdom; local oral tradition associates the construction with the figure known as Bilikisu Sungbo. Archaeologists have recognised the features as large-scale human-made landscape modifications used for territorial delineation and defensive purposes.
The Eredo lies in southwestern Nigeria, running through country around the historic Ijebu area in the coastal forest zone. The features extend across multiple local districts rather than being confined to a single small site.
- Legendary association: Oral traditions link the earthworks to the legendary figure Bilikisu Sungbo, a woman remembered in local stories and pilgrimage.
- Scale and visibility: Recognised as one of the largest pre-modern man-made earthwork systems in West Africa, visible on the ground and from aerial images.
