The Sun Temple at Konark is a 13th-century Hindu temple on the Bay of Bengal coast in Odisha, attributed to King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty and completed around 1250 CE. It is designed as a colossal stone chariot drawn by seven horses and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visitors see richly carved exterior surfaces with narrative and decorative sculpture and the remnants of the original sanctum, which collapsed centuries ago. The temple complex was built on a grand scale to represent the chariot of the sun god and is noted for its carved wheels and figurative reliefs.
Construction was commissioned by the Eastern Ganga rulers in the mid 13th century as a major temple dedicated to the sun god Surya. Over time the main tower fell and portions of the structure were damaged by weathering and later interventions; conservation work has focused on stabilizing the remaining structures.
Konark stands on the coast of Odisha roughly 35 kilometres from the pilgrimage town of Puri and is approached via the town of Konark on the Bay of Bengal shoreline.
