The Sun Temple at Konark is a 13th-century Hindu temple on the Bay of Bengal coast in Odisha, attributed to King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty and completed around 1250 CE. It is designed as a colossal stone chariot drawn by seven horses and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visitors see richly carved exterior surfaces with narrative and decorative sculpture and the remnants of the original sanctum, which collapsed centuries ago. The temple complex was built on a grand scale to represent the chariot of the sun god and is noted for its carved wheels and figurative reliefs.

Construction was commissioned by the Eastern Ganga rulers in the mid 13th century as a major temple dedicated to the sun god Surya. Over time the main tower fell and portions of the structure were damaged by weathering and later interventions; conservation work has focused on stabilizing the remaining structures.

Konark stands on the coast of Odisha roughly 35 kilometres from the pilgrimage town of Puri and is approached via the town of Konark on the Bay of Bengal shoreline.

  • Chariot form and dating: The main temple was constructed in the 13th century and is designed as a monumental chariot with carved stone wheels and horses set along the seafront.
  • Practical tips: Best light for photography is in the morning when the low sun highlights detailed carvings; the site can be hot and exposed, so carry water and sun protection.

Tips for Visiting Sun Temple, Konârak #

  • Plan a late-afternoon visit so the low sun brings out the carved reliefs and makes details easier to photograph while avoiding the midday coastal heat.
  • Walk the full circuit around the temple to view all the exterior friezes-many visitors stay near the obvious frontal façades and miss whole sequences of carvings.
  • Avoid the monsoon months if possible; wind and heavy rain can limit access and obscure fine stone detail.
