Sun Temple
Religious Site 11th-century temple dedicated to sun god Surya
At Modhera in Gujarat, the 11th-century Sun Temple features a carved stone shrine, a stepped ‘surya kund’ tank and ornate mandapa; visitors study the architecture and attend dance festivals.
The Sun Temple at Modhera in Gujarat is an early 11th-century Hindu temple complex dedicated to the solar deity and built under the Chaulukya (Solanki) dynasty. The monument is an important surviving example of medieval temple architecture in western India.
The complex comprises an east-facing sanctum, an assembly hall (sabha-mandapa) with intricately carved pillars and a rectangular stepped tank (kunda) in front used for ritual bathing. The temple’s exterior and interior surfaces are covered with finely carved reliefs depicting mythological scenes, musicians and daily life, and the layout is deliberately aligned with the rising sun.
The site is compact and designed to be read as an integrated ritual geometry tying shrine, hall and tank together, making it popular with visitors interested in medieval Indian art and temple design.
The temple was constructed in the early 11th century during the reign of King Bhima I of the Chaulukya dynasty. Over time it fell into disuse and was later conserved and restored in modern times to preserve its architectural and sculptural programme.
Located in the village of Modhera in northern Gujarat, the temple lies inland from the Gulf of Cambay and is roughly northwest of Ahmedabad; it is commonly visited as a day trip from regional urban centres.
- Date and patron: Constructed in the early 11th century by the Chaulukya (Solanki) dynasty under King Bhima I, the temple complex is an intact example of medieval Indian temple architecture dedicated to the sun god.
- Best time to visit: The temple faces east so the first rays of the morning sun fall across its most important sculpted surfaces; sunrise visits are especially rewarding for photography and architectural observation.
What to See #
- Sanctum (garbhagriha): The sanctum (garbhagriha) originally housed an image of the solar deity and is aligned to the east so the rising sun would illuminate the inner chamber at dawn.
- Assembly hall and carved exterior: The assembly hall (sabha-mandapa) and the richly carved exterior walls display extensive high-relief sculpture typical of early 11th-century temple art in the region.
- Stepped tank (kund): A large stepped reservoir (kunda) lies in front of the temple and was used for ritual bathing and ceremonies associated with the sun cult.
