How to Get to Sun Moon Lake #
Sun Moon Lake is in central Taiwan’s Nantou County. By car it’s roughly 70-90 km (about 1-1.5 hours) from Taichung via National Freeway 6 to Puli and then Provincial Highway 21 to the lake. From Taichung HSR or Taichung city there are direct tourist and intercity buses (shuttle services) to Sun Moon Lake; local buses circulate around the lake with short walks between piers and attractions.
Tips for Visiting Sun Moon Lake #
- Go early (pre-sunrise if you want misty lake views) to enjoy calmer water and smaller crowds at the main piers; photographers especially benefit from the early light.
- Use the regular boat shuttle connecting Shuishe, Ita Thao and Xuanguang piers to cover the lake efficiently-start at Shuishe for the most services or at Ita Thao to combine the ride with the local market and lakeside eateries.
- Bicycle the lakeside route in the less-busy morning hours; rentals concentrate around the main piers, and heading out early gives you quieter stretches and better light for photos.
