Sun Moon Lake is the largest natural lake in Taiwan, located in Yuchi Township, Nantou County in central Taiwan. The lake is a freshwater lake surrounded by forested hills and is a major inland tourist destination for boat tours, lakeside temples and scenic viewpoints.

Key visitor activities include short boat cruises that serve multiple lakeside piers, walking trails and cycling around portions of the shoreline, and visits to prominent temple sites such as the lakeshore Wenwu Temple and the nearby Ita Thao village. The lakeside area also features viewpoints and a memorial pagoda accessible by path or road.

The area has long been home to the indigenous Thao people and developed as a tourist destination with roads, piers and visitor facilities in the 20th century. Conservation and visitor management are ongoing to balance tourism with the lake’s environmental setting.

Sun Moon Lake is situated in the mountainous interior of central Taiwan and is administered from Yuchi Township in Nantou County.

  • Boat shuttles: Boat shuttle services operate between multiple piers on the lake, providing convenient transport to temples and village piers; schedules vary by season.
  • Cycling: Cycling is a popular way to experience the lake; paved lakeside paths and rental services allow a full circuit of the main shore areas in stages.

What to See #

  • Wenwu Temple: A lakeside Taoist and folk temple complex on the north shore popular with visitors for views and pilgrimage, combining multiple shrine halls and traditional architecture.
  • Ita Thao: A lakeside indigenous village and visitor area on the lake's shore known for local crafts, food stalls and access to boat services that link multiple piers.
  • Ci'en Pagoda: A tall memorial pagoda on a wooded ridge above the lake that provides panoramic views across the water and is accessed by a stepped path or road.
