Sümela Monastery
Religious Site Cliffside Orthodox monastery carved into steep rock
Built into a steep cliff, Sümela Monastery contains Orthodox frescoes and monastic rooms reachable by footpath; visitors combine pilgrimage, mountain hikes and views across the Karadere valley in the Pontic range.
Sümela Monastery is a historic Greek Orthodox monastery built into a steep limestone cliff above the Altındere valley. Its cliffside churches, frescoes and monastic rooms form a vertical complex tied to Byzantine and later medieval Christian practice.
The nucleus of the monastery includes the rock-cut Virgin Mary church with frescoed interiors, cells and service spaces connected by stairways and terraces. Many of the surviving structures date to medieval rebuilding phases, with fresco cycles and architectural elements from different periods.
According to tradition the monastery’s foundation dates to the late 4th century AD, though most modern architectural evidence reflects Byzantine and later medieval reconstruction and expansion. The site served as a major monastic centre until the early 20th century and has undergone conservation and selective restoration in recent decades.
The monastery is set high on a cliff face in the Altındere valley near the town of Maçka, on the inland side of Turkey’s Black Sea coast; the valley below is forested and steep.
- Founding tradition: Tradition holds the monastery was founded in AD 386; much of the visible architecture belongs to later Byzantine and late medieval phases and to renovations by the Empire of Trebizond.
- Location and access: The complex is perched on a steep cliff at roughly 1,200 metres elevation, giving it a commanding view over the Altındere valley and making access via steps and switchbacks necessary.
What to See #
- Main monastery complex: The rock-cut main monastery complex including the Virgin Mary church with frescoed interiors and monks' cells built into the cliff face.
- Ancillary structures: Auxiliary chapels, kitchens and guest rooms carved into the limestone cliff and connected by stairways and terraces overlooking the valley below.
How to Get to Sümela Monastery #
Sümela Monastery (Altındere Valley) is reached from Trabzon (the monastery is in the Maçka district). By road it’s about 40-60 km from Trabzon city centre depending on route and traffic-allow roughly 1-1.5 hours by car. Regular tours and local minibuses run from Trabzon and from Maçka town in the tourist season.
There is a parking/visitor area below the monastery; reaching the monastery requires a paved uphill walk of around 10-30 minutes from the parking/visitor centre along footpaths.
Tips for Visiting Sümela Monastery #
- Aim for an early arrival before the main minibuses and tour groups from Trabzon; mornings are quieter for photography and for enjoying the cliff-top setting without crowds.
- Start at the Altındere Valley Park entrance and follow the marked path up to the monastery so you experience the valley viewpoint and interpretive panels first; many visitors focus only on the buildings at the cliff face.
- Allow time to explore the interior chapels and fresco fragments rather than treating the site as a single viewpoint-some of the most interesting fresco details are tucked inside lesser-visited rooms.
- Check seasonal access notices ahead of travel: steep paths and the immediate area can be affected by weather or restoration work, and local authorities sometimes limit visitor numbers.
Best Time to Visit Sümela Monastery #
Plan to visit Sümela Monastery from late spring through early autumn when mountain access is most reliable and the site is accessible.
