Šumava National Park
National Park Forested national park on Czech–German border, peat bogs
Šumava National Park along the Czech-German border protects peat bogs, spruce forests and long-distance trails. Outdoor visitors arrive for hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing, plus quiet lakes and traditional mountain villages.
Šumava National Park covers a large portion of the Šumava mountain range in the Czech Republic along the border with Germany. It preserves montane forests, peat bogs and glacial landforms and is one of the country’s principal protected mountain landscapes.
A mix of long-distance hiking and cycling trails, extensive forested ridges, raised peat bogs and scattered glacial lakes that are accessible from several trailheads. Wildlife viewing, quiet forests and cross-country skiing in winter are key draws for outdoor recreation.
The park was established as a national protected area in the early 1990s to conserve the regional mountain ecosystems and to provide coordinated management of forests and peatlands. Parts of the area have been left to natural processes for decades, allowing regeneration of native forest.
Located in the south-west of the Czech Republic, primarily in the Plzeň and South Bohemian regions along the border with Bavaria, Germany; nearby regional towns provide trail access and visitor services.
- Transboundary conservation: The park forms a transboundary ecological zone with Germany's Bavarian Forest, creating a continuous area of montane forest and peatland habitats along the border.
- Peat bogs and boardwalks: Peat bogs and montane wetlands are concentrated in the upper areas and are best visited on designated boardwalks and marked trails to protect fragile ground.
What to See #
- Boubín primeval forest: A well-preserved ancient spruce forest on the massif of Boubín, centred around the summit area and notable for trees that have been protected from logging for many decades.
- Glacial lakes (e.g., Black Lake): A deep glacial basin containing one of the better-known mountain lakes in the park, set among steep, forested slopes and accessed by established trails.
