Sulphur Mountain (Alberta)

Sulphur Mountain is a prominent mountain ridge in Banff National Park, Alberta, with a summit elevation of about 2,451 metres. It towers immediately above the town of Banff and is one of the park’s most visited viewpoints.

The ridge offers wide panoramic views over the Bow Valley, the townsite of Banff, and surrounding peaks; much of this is accessible from the upper terminal of the Banff Gondola, which sits on the ridge. The gondola terminal and ridge viewing platforms provide accessible viewpoints and interpretive displays.

A maintained boardwalk follows the summit ridge to observation platforms and historic scientific building remains, giving short, easy walks with high-elevation alpine scenery. A hiking route also gains the ridge from the Banff town area for visitors who prefer a trail ascent.

The area containing Sulphur Mountain has been part of Banff National Park since the park’s early formation. The ridge has long been a local landmark; visitor infrastructure including the gondola and upper facilities was added in the 20th century to support tourism and interpretation.

The mountain sits immediately south of the town of Banff in Banff National Park, about 120 kilometres west of Calgary, Alberta. The ridge overlooks the Bow Valley and is directly accessible from Banff by road and the gondola.
