Sulaymaniyya Takiyya Religious Site

The Sulaymaniyya Takiyya is an Ottoman-era religious complex in Damascus, Syria, constructed in the 16th century as a takiyya - a hospice and accommodation complex for pilgrims and Sufi adherents. It represents one of the major Ottoman architectural interventions in the old city of Damascus.

Architectural features include a mosque, enclosed courtyards and service rooms arranged as a kulliye for religious and charitable activities; the complex is often attributed to the work of Ottoman architects active under Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Its style contrasts with the earlier Islamic architecture of Damascus and introduced Ottoman spatial and decorative elements to the urban fabric.

The takiyya was built to house pilgrims and provide a centre for Sufi practice, and over time it has served religious, social and funerary functions within the city. Repairs and changes have been made across centuries but the core plan and functions remain identifiable.
