Sukur
Garden Hilltop cultural landscape with terraced fields and ironwork
Sukur Cultural Landscape on a ridge in Adamawa features terraced fields, stone compounds and an iron‑smelting tradition; UNESCO‑listed, it attracts visitors interested in indigenous settlement patterns, ritual sites and hillside farming systems.
Sukur is a hill-top cultural landscape in Adamawa State in northeastern Nigeria, recognised for its terraced fields, stone-built settlement and ritual structures. The site preserves a distinctive mountain settlement pattern with visible terracing and ritual mounds.
Visitors find well-preserved stone houses and a ruler’s compound set among stepped agricultural terraces and dry-stone walls; the landscape shows long-standing iron-working and farming traditions. The arrangement of settlement, fields and ritual spaces is an integral part of the site’s cultural significance.
The Sukur complex evolved over centuries under local chiefs and was a regional centre of ironworking and agriculture; its form and land-use patterns have been maintained through traditional practices. The site was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999 as an outstanding example of a human cultural landscape.
Sukur sits on a ridge in the Mandara mountains region of Adamawa State, roughly 250 kilometres northeast of Yola and close to the Cameroon border, set on steep terrain with broad views over surrounding valleys.
