Sukhothai Historical Park
Historical Site Ruined capital complex with early Thai temples and statues
Ruined temples and palm-lined ponds around Sukhothai’s old city make Sukhothai Historical Park a cycling-friendly site of 13th-century Khmer and Thai architecture, frequented for sunrise photography and history walks.
Sukhothai Historical Park preserves the ruins of the capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom, a political and cultural centre of north-central Thailand in the 13th and 14th centuries. The site contains temple compounds, royal structures, moats and canals set within a largely flat, planted landscape.
Major monuments include Wat Mahathat, Wat Si Chum with its large seated Buddha visible through a narrow doorway, and several island temples such as Wat Sa Si set in reflective ponds. The layout shows planned city walls, water management channels and a concentration of brick-and-laterite temple architecture typical of the early Thai state.
The city was established as the Sukhothai Kingdoms capital in the late 13th century and flourished during the 13th and 14th centuries before political power shifted to other Thai kingdoms; the ruins were later preserved and conserved as an archaeological park.
The historical park is located in Sukhothai province in north-central Thailand, beside the modern town of Sukhothai and set within a largely rural agricultural landscape.
- Practical tip: The park is best explored by bicycle or quiet local transport, allowing visitors to move easily between dispersed temple groups across the ruins.
What to See #
- Wat Mahathat: Located at the historic core of the old capital, it contains the parks best-known group of temples and the iconic seated Buddha images from the 13th century.
- Wat Si Chum: Famous for its huge seated Buddha image visible through a narrow opening in the mondop; the structure dates from the Sukhothai period.
- Wat Sa Si: A small island temple group set amid a pond that exemplifies Sukhothais use of water and landscaped temple settings from the 13th-14th centuries.
