Sudetes
Mountains Central European mountain range along the Czech-Polish border
The Sudetes form a low Central European mountain chain with hiking trails, ski resorts and forested ridges along the Czech-Polish border. Travelers come for walking routes, winter sports, granite peaks and small towns offering regional food and mountain lodges.
A mountain range running along the border region of southwestern Poland and the Czech Republic, the Sudetes form a long chain of ridges and plateaus stretching from the Bohemian Massif to the Polish lowlands. The range includes several distinct subranges and contains the highest Sudetes summit, Śnieżka, at 1,603 metres.
Hikers and skiers visit the Sudetes for a mix of alpine peaks, forested hills and established resorts; the area includes cross-border national parks and a network of marked trails. The landscape varies from rounded granite and metamorphic peaks to forested plateaus and river valleys.
Historically the Sudetes have been a frontier and mining region, with settlements, roads and industries developing in the valleys and passes over centuries. In the 20th century the area became an important borderland and is now a focus for regional conservation and tourism.
The Sudetes lie along the Czech-Polish border in central Europe; the range is accessed from regional cities such as Wrocław and Prague and from numerous towns and transport hubs in the Hradec Králové and Lower Silesian regions.
- Protected parks: Protected areas include national parks on both sides of the border, making the region important for conservation and mountain recreation.
- Outdoor activities: Offers summer hiking across marked trails and winter skiing at established resorts in the higher subranges.
What to See #
- Krkonoše (Giant Mountains): The Krkonoše or Giant Mountains subrange, which contains Śnieżka, the highest peak in the Sudetes at 1,603 metres and core protected national parks on both Czech and Polish sides.
- Hrubý Jeseník: Hrubý Jeseník, a central Sudetes subrange with rugged peaks and a history of mountain agriculture and small-scale mining.
- Śnieżnik Massif: The Śnieżnik Massif, an eastern group of highland peaks known for their rounded summits and cross-border hiking routes.
Tips for Visiting Sudetes #
- Visit in late spring or early autumn for stable mountain weather, lower fog frequency and vibrant alpine flora-summer weekends can be busy on popular Krkonoše trails, and winter conditions require full alpine gear.
- Use established gateways on the Czech side such as Pec pod Sněžkou or Špindlerův Mlýn when tackling the Krkonoše (part of the Sudetes); these towns provide trailheads, lifts and reliable public-transport links into the range.
- Avoid popular ridge routes at peak weekend times by choosing lesser-known sectors of the Sudetes (for example the Orlické or Jeseníky foothills) for quieter trails and comparable scenery-many visitors concentrate on the highest peaks while nearby ridges remain tranquil.
Best Time to Visit Sudetes #
Visit the Sudetes in summer for hiking and in winter if you want snow sports; shoulder seasons offer the best balance of access and scenery.
