Main image

The Sudbury Basin in Ontario, Canada, is a large meteorite impact structure and one of Earth’s oldest and largest known impact sites, formed roughly 1.85 billion years ago. Its geology hosts extensive ore deposits that have supported major mining activity for more than a century.

The basin is characterized by an oval, deeply fractured geological structure with rich concentrations of nickel, copper and platinum-group elements; mining and smelting have been central to the region’s economy and landscape. The area contains open-pit and underground mines and associated processing facilities.

Formed by a massive impact event in the Paleoproterozoic, the basin’s unique rock assemblages and ore bodies were produced and concentrated during the impact and subsequent geological processes. The basin has been intensively studied by geologists as a premier example of an impact-related ore system.

Geographically the Sudbury Basin occupies the area around the city of Greater Sudbury in northeastern Ontario; the oval structural feature measures on the order of tens of kilometres across and dominates the local topography.

  • Impact origin and mining: An impact structure formed about 1.85 billion years ago that contains significant nickel, copper and platinum-group mineralization and underpins the Sudbury mining district.
