Sucevița Monastery

Sucevița Monastery is a late 16th-century Eastern Orthodox monastic complex in Suceava County, Romania, noted for richly painted exterior frescoes. It is one of the famous painted monasteries of the Bucovina region.

The site is best known for its extensive exterior frescoes that cover the church walls and illustrate biblical scenes, a fortified wall with towers, and a preserved monastic ensemble visitors can walk around. The fresco cycle and the intact defensive layout are major reasons people visit.

Founded in the late 1500s by local noble patrons, the monastery grew into a fortified religious complex during a period of regional conflict. Over centuries it functioned as a religious centre and retains much of its original painted decoration and defensive architecture.
