Štrbské pleso is a glacial mountain lake and a resort locality in the High Tatras of Slovakia, known as one of the region’s principal alpine lakes and tourist bases. The site functions as both a natural landmark and a gateway to surrounding peaks.
The lake itself is the main attraction, with a surfaced promenade, alpine hotels and boat-landing points that provide easy walking circuits of the shore. How to Get to Štrbské pleso #
From Poprad (Poprad-Tatry railway station) take the Tatra Electric Railway (TEŽ) toward Štrbské Pleso - the electric train ride connects the town/rail hub with the mountain lake and stops directly at Štrbské Pleso (a very short walk to the lake and facilities). By road Štrbské Pleso is about 15-25 km from Poprad and typically a 30-45 minute drive depending on conditions.
Tips for Visiting Štrbské pleso #
- Take the Tatra Electric Railway (Štrbské Pleso stop) rather than driving - parking is limited in high season and the train delivers you right to the lakefront.
- Go early in the morning for calm water reflections and far fewer visitors on the lakeside promenade; popular hiking connections and cable car links become busy by late morning on summer weekends.
- Walk the short lakeside trail counterclockwise and, if you want quieter views, continue a short way up to the Solisko cable car or the higher viewpoints where many day visitors don't go.
