Stratonicea (Caria) is an ancient Hellenistic city located in Muğla Province, southwestern Turkey, founded in the Hellenistic period and later developed under Roman and Byzantine rule. The site contains substantial public buildings and extensive archaeological remains.
A large theatre, an agora and bouleuterion complex, well-preserved Roman baths and a visible street grid, with stone masonry and monumental public architecture dating mainly to the Roman era. Visitors come to inspect monumental ruins and archaeological trenches; many features are accessible on foot across the site.
Founded in the Hellenistic era and named for the Seleucid royal name Stratonice, the city was rebuilt and expanded in Roman times and continued to be occupied into the Byzantine period. Excavations over the 20th and 21st centuries have revealed successive building phases from the Hellenistic through Byzantine periods.
The ruins lie near the modern village of Eskihisar in the Yatağan district of Muğla Province, inland from the southwestern Anatolian coast. The site sits in a rural landscape of rolling hills and agricultural land, reachable by road from regional towns.
