Stortorget is the oldest and most central public square in Gamla stan, Stockholm’s Old Town. It is a historic focal point surrounded by narrow streets and closely spaced historic buildings.
The square is lined by colorful 17th- and 18th-century façades and contains the Stockholm Stock Exchange Building, which houses the Nobel Museum. It is a compact pedestrian space commonly used for photographs, cafés and seasonal markets.
Stortorget dates back to the medieval period and has been the site of public commerce, civic events and historic incidents, including the Stockholm Bloodbath in 1520. The square’s present appearance reflects centuries of urban development in the old town.
Stortorget sits in the heart of Gamla stan, within walking distance of the Royal Palace and central Stockholm transit links.
