Stora Essingen is an island in Stockholm County in Lake Mälaren and forms part of the built-up western archipelago of Stockholm. It is primarily a residential area with villas, apartment buildings and local marinas.
The island offers waterside recreation including boating and walking along the shoreline, and has local shops and services serving residents. It is connected to Lilla Essingen and the mainland by road bridges and is integrated into Stockholm’s local transport network.
Historically the Essingen islands developed from summer-house and leisure uses into permanent residential neighbourhoods during the 20th century as Stockholm expanded westward. Infrastructure development gradually increased year-round habitation and services on the island.
Geographically Stora Essingen lies in Lake Mälaren about a short drive or ferry ride west of central Stockholm, forming part of the inner archipelago adjacent to other Essinge islands.
