Stołowe Mountains
Mountains Poland's Table Mountains with unique sandstone formations
The Stołowe Mountains (Table Mountains) in Lower Silesia feature flat-topped sandstone formations, maze-like rock paths and marked trails around Błędne Skały, appealing to hikers and photographers.
The Stołowe Mountains, known in English as the Table Mountains, are a compact sandstone massif in southwestern Poland, notable for their flat-topped ridges and distinctive rock formations. They lie in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship and form part of the Sudetes mountain chain.
Hikers and sightseers come for the sculpted sandstone rock formations, natural terraces and short, waymarked trails; the area is especially valued for photographic viewpoints and family-friendly hikes. Two of the most visited spots are the summit of Szczeliniec Wielki and the Błędne Skały rock labyrinth.
The landscape developed over millions of years by erosion of horizontal sandstone layers, creating the plateau-like morphology and fissures. The area has been visited for centuries and is now managed for conservation and tourism.
The massif sits in southwestern Poland near the Czech border, north of Kudowa-Zdrój and within driving distance of Wrocław and other Lower Silesian towns. The park entrances and trailheads are reached from nearby towns and tourist centres.
- Geology and landscape: The range is characterized by flat-topped sandstone mesas and unusual rock formations created by erosion, making it unique among Polish mountain areas.
- Conservation and access: Much of the massif is protected as Stołowe Mountains National Park and offers marked trails, viewpoints and visitor facilities near the main entrances.
What to See #
- Szczeliniec Wielki: The highest summit in the massif at 919 metres, featuring a wooden staircase and viewing terraces that overlook the park and surrounding lowlands.
- Błędne Skały (Errant Rocks): A section of dense, maze-like sandstone formations featuring narrow passages and platforms; popular for short hiking routes and photographic viewpoints.
How to Get to Stołowe Mountains #
The Stołowe Mountains (Góry Stołowe) are reached by road from local towns such as Kudowa-Zdrój and Kłodzko in Lower Silesia. Visitors normally drive to one of the park entrances or trailheads (for example the Błędne Skały area near Kudowa-Zdrój) and park there before starting hikes on marked trails. Regional roads connect the park to the larger road network; the nearest towns provide local bus links and tourist information on access points.
Tips for Visiting Stołowe Mountains #
- Aim for early morning or late afternoon visits to Szczeliniec Wielki and Błędne Skały (the two must-see formations) to avoid the busiest midday crowds on the narrow rock trails.
- Use the official park car parks and marked trails for both safety and to protect fragile rock formations; the most rewarding routes are the designated paths that lead through the rock labyrinths rather than trying informal shortcuts.
- Visit in shoulder seasons (spring or autumn) if you can - you'll have cooler temperatures, better light for photos and noticeably fewer tourists than peak summer weekends.
