Owl Mountains Mountains

The Owl Mountains (Góry Sowie) are a mid-altitude mountain range in Lower Silesia in south-western Poland and form part of the Central Sudetes. The range’s highest summit is Wielka Sowa at 1,015 metres.

Trails cross the range linking forested ridges, viewpoints and small settlements; the area is popular for hiking, mountain biking and winter walking, with mountain shelters and marked routes. The mountains are also known for extensive subterranean works from the World War II era, built into the bedrock beneath parts of the range.

Located within Lower Silesian Voivodeship, the Owl Mountains lie inland from the Silesian lowlands and are reachable from regional towns such as Wałbrzych and Dzierżoniów, forming a distinct landscape of rounded forested summits and human-made underground structures.

• Trails and seasons: The range is part of the Central Sudetes and offers well-marked hiking routes, mountain shelters and viewpoints; many routes are accessible year-round although snow can close high tracks in winter.

• Wielka Sowa peak: Wielka Sowa, the range’s highest peak at 1,015 metres, which offers marked trails and a summit observation tower used for panoramic views.
• Riese underground complex: The Riese complex - a network of tunnels and underground structures built during World War II beneath the range, partially accessible via guided visits at several locations.

The Owl Mountains are reached from towns in Lower Silesia; the largest nearby centres include Wałbrzych and Dzierżoniów. Regional roads and local buses connect trailheads; a car is convenient for reaching remote trailheads and historic sites.

• Many trails are used by locals - hire a local guide for longer routes through mines and wartime ruins for safety and historical context.
• In winter, be cautious: snow cover and fog can make the Owl Mountains' network of paths and wartime tunnels disorienting.
