Stockholm Palace
Palace Royal palace and official residence of Sweden's monarch
Facing the water in Gamla Stan, Stockholm Palace serves as the Swedish monarch’s official residence and contains state museums. Tourists tour the Royal Apartments, the Treasury and watch the changing‑of‑the‑guard ceremonies.
Stockholm Palace is the official royal palace of the Swedish monarch, located on Stadsholmen in central Stockholm and serving as a major state building and museum complex. It was rebuilt after the 1697 fire that destroyed the medieval Tre Kronor castle and constructed in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
The palace contains state rooms used for official functions, museum displays such as the Royal Armoury and the Treasury, and ceremonial spaces still used for state occasions. Visitors commonly tour the Royal Apartments and museum collections to see regalia, historic uniforms and ceremonial objects.
Principal design and construction followed the work of architects including Nicodemus Tessin the Younger; the complex reflects baroque and later interior phases associated with Sweden’s monarchical history. The building has been adapted over time for public display while retaining its role for formal royal events.
The palace stands on the island of Stadsholmen in the old town area (Gamla Stan), directly facing the Riksdag (parliament) across the water and within walking distance of central Stockholm transport hubs.
- Construction history: Built on the site of the 13th-century Tre Kronor castle after a fire in 1697, the current palace was constructed from the late 17th century and completed in the 18th century.
- Visitor access: The palace contains several public museums including the Royal Apartments, the Armoury and the Treasury; guided tours are the usual way to visit interior collections.

- Treasury and Royal Armoury: The Treasury housing the Swedish crown regalia and ceremonial objects, and the Royal Armoury displaying historic arms, armour and ceremonial carriages.

Tips for Visiting Stockholm Palace #
- Visit right when the palace opens to get ahead of the cruise-ship and tour-group influx; mornings are the calmest time for the State Apartments and the Royal Collections.
- Use the Slottsbacken visitor entrance on the north side of the palace (the side facing the square) and book guided-tour slots or timed tickets in advance during peak season.
- Check the Royal Court's calendar before you go-parts of the palace close for official events, so a closure notice can affect access to the State Rooms and ceremonial halls.
