Main image

The Stoa Poikile, or Painted Stoa, was a colonnaded public porch on the north side of the Ancient Agora in Athens, decorated with painted panels and renowned in antiquity. It became famous as the site where Zeno of Citium taught, giving the Stoic school its name.

Visitors to the Agora archaeological area see the remains and footprint of the stoa amid other civic and religious ruins; the site is of interest for classical architecture and the history of Hellenistic philosophy. Interpretive information at the Agora helps place the painted decoration and Stoic associations in context.

Built in the 5th century BCE and decorated with famous battle and mythological paintings, the stoa served as a public meeting place and display for civic themes. In the Hellenistic period it became associated with philosophical teaching, most notably the Stoics.

The stoa sits on the northern edge of the Ancient Agora of Athens, west of the Acropolis and within the central archaeological area of the city.

  • Philosophical importance: The name of the Stoic school, Stoicism, derives from this painted porch where Zeno of Citium taught in the early 3rd century BCE.
  • Archaeological setting: Located on the north side of the Ancient Agora of Athens, the site is part of the broader archaeological complex around the Acropolis and Agora.

You can also reach the site on foot from Plaka via Adrianou Street or by surface buses that stop at Monastiraki.

Tips for Visiting Stoa Poikile #

  • The Painted Stoa stands within the Ancient Agora site, so enter via the Agora's main entrances on Adrianou/Thission and include it on the same circuit as the Stoa of Attalos and the Agora Museum.
