Steamtown National Historic Site

Steamtown National Historic Site is a National Park Service unit in Scranton, Pennsylvania, dedicated to preserving the history and technology of steam-era railroading in the United States. The site maintains a collection of locomotives, rolling stock and railroad-related artifacts.

Exhibits include restored locomotives on display, museum galleries with interpretive material about steam technology and railroad operations, and a roundhouse area where visitors can view equipment and some restoration work. The site has hosted scheduled excursion trains and special events that operate on nearby track infrastructure.

The museum traces its origins to a private collection assembled by F. Nelson Blount and the Steamtown, U.S.A. museum; the Scranton location was designated as a National Historic Site in 1986 to preserve the collection and interpret steam-era railroading for the public.

Located in downtown Scranton along the former Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad yard near the Lackawanna River, the site is accessible from the city’s central area and regional road network.
