Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center
Museum Modern cultural complex housing library, opera, and park
On Athens’ Faliro bay the SNFCC contains the National Library and Greek National Opera, a seaside park and a planted roof that hosts concerts and public promenades.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) is a cultural campus in the Faliro/Neo Faliro area of Athens that houses the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera. It was designed by Renzo Piano and opened in 2016 as a philanthropy-funded cultural and public-park development.
The site combines purpose-built cultural buildings with a landscaped public park, a long reflecting canal and an extensive planted rooftop that functions as an elevated public promenade. The centre hosts performances, exhibitions, educational programmes and large public events, and the park is used daily by residents and visitors.
The project was funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and developed in the 2010s to relocate and modernise national cultural institutions while adding significant public green space. Since opening the complex has become both an institutional home for the library and opera and a widely used urban park.
The SNFCC sits on reclaimed port-adjacent land in southwestern Athens, a few kilometres southwest of the historic city centre and within the Attica region, near the coastal front of the Saronic Gulf.
