The Archaeological Museum of Piraeus is located in central Piraeus, the port city of Athens, and displays artifacts recovered from archaeological work in the wider Piraeus area. Its collections cover material culture ranging from the Archaic period through the Roman era.

Exhibits include sculpture, pottery, inscriptions and grave goods that document the maritime and commercial history of the ancient port. The museum’s displays emphasise objects found in local excavations rather than pieces moved from other regions.

The building sits within walking distance of the main port and transport hubs of Piraeus, making it accessible to travelers arriving by sea or rail from Athens and the surrounding region.

What to See#

• Sculpture hall: Sculpture and major finds hall exhibiting large-scale stone and bronze works recovered from ancient Piraeus and surrounding cemeteries, spanning Archaic to Roman periods.
• Pottery and small finds: Pottery and small finds galleries that present amphorae, pottery, inscriptions and everyday objects excavated from the ancient port and burial sites around Piraeus.

From central Athens (Syntagma or Monastiraki), take the Piraeus-bound metro Line 1 (green line) to Piraeus station; the museum is about a 15-20 minute walk northwest of the station along Drakopoulou/Koumoundourou streets. By bus, several lines (including 040 and 049) stop in the Piraeus center; from the port’s main ferry terminals it’s an easy taxi ride (5-10 minutes).

• Enter through the small courtyard side entrance on Drapetsonos Street to avoid the largest tour groups that cluster by the main road.
• Look for the plaster casts and the display case of amphora stamps - most visitors rush to the sculptures and miss these quotidian objects that tell Piraeus's trade story.
• Combine with a walk along Kastella hill (a 20-25 minute uphill walk) for sunset views over the harbor.
