Statue of Liberty is a neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, presented by France to the United States and dedicated in 1886. The statue itself stands 46 metres from base to torch and about 93 metres including its pedestal and foundation.

Visitors travel to the island by ferry from Battery Park in Manhattan or Liberty State Park in New Jersey; access to the pedestal museum and island grounds is included with most ferry tickets while crown access requires advance reservation. The pedestal contains exhibits about the gift and construction, and the island offers skyline views of Manhattan.

Designed by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi with an internal iron framework by Gustave Eiffel, the statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886 as a symbol of freedom and welcome to arriving immigrants. It has been maintained and restored several times and is administered by the U.S. National Park Service.

Situated on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, the monument lies just southwest of Lower Manhattan and is a short ferry ride from the city.

  • Crown reservations: Crown access is limited and requires advance, timed reservations; spaces are restricted for safety and capacity reasons.
  • Free viewing option: The Staten Island Ferry passes close to Liberty Island and offers free, unobstructed views of the statue without island entry.

Tips for Visiting Statue of Liberty #

  • Take the first ferry of the day from Battery Park (Manhattan) or Liberty State Park (New Jersey) to minimize security lines and get clearer photos before crowds arrive.

  • Consider departing from Liberty State Park if you prefer shorter queues and a less hectic embarkation experience; combine your visit with Ellis Island later in the day when many visitors have returned to Manhattan.
