Starved Rock State Park

Starved Rock State Park is a state park on the Illinois River near Utica, Illinois, established to protect a stretch of sandstone bluffs and canyons. It is known for its river overlooks and carved sandstone formations.

The park features a prominent sandstone butte called Starved Rock that rises about 125 feet above the river, a network of sandstone canyons with seasonal waterfalls, and roughly 13 miles of maintained hiking trails connecting overlooks and canyon floors. Trails lead to multiple canyon interiors and river viewpoints, with the best waterfall views typically in spring after thaw or heavy rain.

Designated as an Illinois state park in 1911, the area has been managed for public recreation since the early 20th century. The canyons and bluffs were formed by erosion of sandstone layers over geologic time.

The park sits along the Illinois River near the village of Utica, about 90 miles southwest of Chicago, with the river forming the park’s western boundary.
