The Star Mountains are a mountain range in western New Guinea, straddling the border between Indonesia’s Papua province and Papua New Guinea. The range forms part of the central New Guinea cordillera and comprises steep, densely forested peaks.
Terrain is rugged and heavily forested with deep valleys and limited developed trails, so travel into the range is challenging and often restricted to scientific expeditions, local inhabitants and a few guided ventures. Lowland and montane rainforest and frequent rainfall characterize the environment.
The area has long been inhabited by indigenous peoples and was gradually mapped by European and colonial expeditions in the 20th century; much of the range remains sparsely studied and largely undisturbed.
Geographically the Star Mountains lie along the international border region in the central spine of New Guinea, forming a remote highland zone between Indonesian Papua and western Papua New Guinea.
