How to Get to Stans#
Stans is best accessed via Zurich Airport with a fast rail connection through Lucerne and the Zentralbahn to Stans. Local PostAuto buses and short train rides make getting around the canton straightforward.
Zurich Airport (ZRH): Zurich is the main international gateway for Stans. From ZRH take an SBB train to Lucerne (about 55-65 minutes, CHF 17-30), then take the Zentralbahn service from Lucerne to Stans (15-20 minutes, CHF 4-8).
Bern or Geneva (BRN/GVA): These are alternative airports but entail longer rail journeys via Bern or Luzern; travel times are significantly longer than via Zurich, so they are less convenient for Stans.
Train: Stans is served by the Zentralbahn line (Lucerne-Stans-Engelberg) with regular trains from Lucerne (Gare de Lucerne). Journey time from Lucerne is about 15-20 minutes and tickets are available at machines or via the Zentralbahn/SBB apps (single fares small, CHF 4-8).
Bus: PostBus (PostAuto) operates local buses around Nidwalden connecting Stans with nearby villages and higher-elevation spots. Buses complement the rail service for locations off the rail corridor; Swiss fares are precise and can be covered by Swiss Travel Passes.
How to Get Around Stans#
Regional rail (Zentralbahn) from Lucerne is the best way to reach and move around Stans, with PostAuto buses filling in the gaps. For convenience, use trains and walking locally; rent a car for alpine excursions.
- Zentralbahn (train) (CHF 4-8) - Zentralbahn operates frequent, punctual services between Lucerne and Stans (and on to Engelberg). Trains are fast and comfortable; buy tickets at SBB/Zentralbahn machines or use the SBB app. Travel times are short which makes day trips easy.
- SBB (longer-distance trains) (CHF 15-CHF 60 (depending on origin)) - Use SBB services to reach Lucerne from Zurich Airport or other Swiss cities; connections to Zentralbahn are well-timed. Consider a Swiss Travel Pass if you plan multiple rail journeys and regional buses.
- PostBus (PostAuto) (CHF 2.50-CHF 10) - PostAuto buses serve local routes in Nidwalden, reaching villages and mountain access points not on the rail line. They run to timetable and accept Swiss Travel Pass or local tickets; schedules may be less frequent on Sundays.
- Taxi (CHF 20-CHF 60) - Taxis provide rapid door-to-door service around Stans and to nearby attractions like Mount Stanserhorn; they are convenient but significantly more expensive than public transport. Pre-book for early/late transfers.
- Car hire (CHF 50-CHF 120/day) - Renting a car gives flexibility to explore Nidwalden and the nearby alpine roads. Roads are well-maintained but mountain driving requires attention; parking is widely available in town.
- Walking - Stans town centre is compact and pedestrian-friendly - most shops, restaurants and the lakefront can be reached on foot.
