Stahleck Castle (Burg Stahleck) is a medieval hill castle overlooking the town of Bacharach on the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It occupies a prominent position above the river and is a visible landmark in the Middle Rhine valley.
Visitors come for the castle’s elevated views over the Rhine gorge and for its preserved medieval defensive structures including curtain walls and towers. The site also houses guest accommodation and facilities for visitors.
Originally built in the High Middle Ages, the castle was part of the Rhine valley’s network of fortifications and has undergone multiple phases of destruction and reconstruction. In the 20th century the site was restored and repurposed for public and tourist use.
The castle sits on a steep hillside above Bacharach, accessible by footpaths from the town and forming part of the Rhine Gorge UNESCO World Heritage landscape.
