Staffa
Island Uninhabited Scottish island famed for Fingal's Cave
Off the west coast of Mull, Staffa draws visitors for Fingal’s Cave’s hexagonal basalt columns, boat trips that thread sea cliffs, and large seabird colonies. Day boats from Iona and Mull bring hikers and photographers hoping to see seals and puffins.
Staffa is a small uninhabited volcanic island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, best known for its dramatic columnar basalt and the sea cave called Fingal’s Cave. The island’s geology and acoustics have made it a celebrated natural feature since the 19th century.
The defining attraction is Fingal’s Cave, a wave-carved cavern set within hexagonal basalt columns; the cave is commonly described as about 70 metres long with a high arched entrance near 20 metres. The basalt cliffs and stacks around the island offer close-up views of the columnar jointing that formed as lava cooled.
Boat trips often circle the island to view the columns from the water and, when conditions allow, make short landings to inspect the basalt faces. Wildlife viewing is an additional draw - seabirds frequently nest on the cliffs and seals are often seen in surrounding waters.
Staffa’s columnar basalts formed during Paleogene volcanic activity when thick lava flows cooled and fractured into regular columns. The island entered wider public awareness during the Romantic period when artists and composers, including Felix Mendelssohn in 1829, visited and popularised the cave.
Situated off the west coast of Scotland in the Inner Hebrides, Staffa lies northwest of the Isle of Mull; the nearest embarkation points for visitor boats are on Mull, including Tobermory and Ulva Ferry.
- Access: Landing and access are by small boat only and are dependent on sea and weather conditions; boat operators typically run trips from Mull and Iona in summer.
- Cultural note: Felix Mendelssohn visited in 1829 and composed music inspired by the cave; the site is noted for its distinctive acoustics and geology.
What to See #
- Fingal's Cave: A sea cave formed in columnar basalt famous for its hexagonal pillars and resonant acoustics; the cave is roughly 70 metres long with an arched entrance about 20 metres high.
- Columnar basalt cliffs: The island's basalt cliffs and stacks display columnar jointing similar to the Giant's Causeway and are the main walking and viewing areas when landings are possible.
How to Get to Staffa #
Access is by boat from islands such as Mull (Fionnphort) or from Oban and other West Coast ports; tour operators run seasonal trips that include Fingal’s Cave landings when conditions allow.
Tips for Visiting Staffa #
- Bring waterproofs and a windproof layer; the Inner Hebrides weather turns quickly and sea spray accompanies many of the best views.
- Book a boat trip that includes time to explore Fingal's Cave on Staffa-timing and sea conditions determine whether boats land or only circumnavigate the island.
Best Time to Visit Staffa #
