Stadsholmen
Island Central island comprising Stockholm's historic Old Town
The island of Stadsholmen forms much of Stockholm’s Gamla Stan; tourists walk its cobbled lanes to reach the Royal Palace, narrow alleys, cafés and museums that document the city’s medieval core.
Stadsholmen is the central island of Stockholm’s Old Town (Gamla Stan) and forms the city’s medieval core, containing market squares, narrow streets and several principal historic buildings. The island has been Stockholm’s urban centre since the medieval period and remains densely built with historic fabric.
Key places on the island include the main square with its colourful merchant houses, the medieval cathedral, and the Royal Palace. Streets radiate from the main square and the island’s compact layout concentrates most visitor highlights within a short walk.
The island developed as Stockholm grew in the medieval centuries; many surviving buildings date from the 13th to 18th centuries and reflect phases of civic, ecclesiastical and royal architecture. Conservation and restoration have preserved the island’s historic streetscape for tourism and civic use.
Stadsholmen sits centrally on the innermost waterways of Stockholm, connected by bridges to adjacent islands such as Riddarholmen and Helgeandsholmen, and is within walking distance of the modern city centre.
