The Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Dresden State Art Collections) is a group of museums and collections in Dresden, Saxony, that together form one of Europe’s most important museum complexes. Its holdings span fine art, applied arts, porcelain, prints, manuscripts and historic treasures.
The Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault) - the former royal treasury established by Augustus the Strong - the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in the Zwinger with its collection of Old Master paintings including Raphael’s “Sistine Madonna,” and the large Porcelain Collection also displayed in the Zwinger.
The collections were assembled over several centuries by the electors and kings of Saxony and were damaged during the bombing of Dresden in 1945; extensive postwar restoration and conservation work has returned many pieces to display. The institutions operate multiple museum buildings and rotating exhibitions to show conserved works and loans.
The museums are concentrated in central Dresden around the Residenzschloss and the Zwinger palace, close to the Elbe river and Dresden’s historic center.
