St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna

St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom) is the Roman Catholic cathedral at Stephansplatz in central Vienna and serves as the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna; its origins date to the 12th century and it is a principal Gothic landmark in the city.

The building is notable for its tall southern tower, the patterned multicoloured roof, and a large Gothic nave; the roof’s glazed tiles form distinctive heraldic and geometric patterns visible across the old town. Internally there are carved altars, chapels and a series of crypts beneath the building.

Construction began in the 12th century with major Gothic phases in the 14th and 15th centuries; the cathedral underwent repair and restoration after damage during World War II and has been the focus of continuous conservation work. It has been a central religious and civic site throughout Vienna’s history.

The cathedral stands in Stephansplatz in Vienna’s Innere Stadt, at the crossroads of the historic shopping streets and a short walk from the Ringstraße and other city centre landmarks.

• Tower access: Climbing the South Tower gives the best city panorama; the tower is accessed separately from the main cathedral interior and may close in poor weather.
• Viewing tip: The roof mosaic is most easily seen from the adjacent Stephansplatz and from upper-floor viewpoints on surrounding streets such as the Graben and Kohlmarkt.

What to See #

• South Tower (Steffl): The tall southern tower, known locally as the "Steffl," rises to about 136.7 metres and provides panoramic views over central Vienna when open to visitors.
• Roof mosaic: The multicoloured tiled roof on the nave and chancel is covered with glazed tiles arranged in patterned designs and heraldic motifs, visible from surrounding squares and upper floors nearby.
• Catacombs and crypts: A series of medieval catacombs and crypts lie beneath the cathedral; access is limited and normally included on specific guided tours and archaeological visits.
