Church Neoclassical basilica in Budapest with panoramic dome views
Near Deák Ferenc tér, St. Stephen’s Basilica draws visitors to its neoclassical interior, the reliquary of St. Stephen and an observation deck offering city views from the dome.
St. Stephen’s Basilica is a Roman Catholic basilica in central Budapest named for Hungary’s first king, Stephen I, and one of the city’s principal churches. Construction took place across the second half of the 19th century into the early 20th century, and the building is a major architectural landmark.
The basilica houses the relic known as the Holy Right, the mummified right hand associated with King Stephen, which is displayed to pilgrims and visitors. It also includes a public dome observation deck that affords city views.
Built between the mid 19th century and early 20th century, the basilica replaced earlier church buildings on the site and was completed following a lengthy construction process involving multiple architects. It has been restored several times since its completion to repair war and weather damage.
Situated in Pest close to Deák Ferenc tér and the downtown axis, the basilica is within easy walking distance of major shopping streets and transport hubs.
- Height: The building and the Hungarian Parliament share the same external height of 96 meters, giving the basilica a prominent place in the city's skyline.
What to See #
- Dome observation deck: A public observation deck inside the basilica's dome reaches the building's rooftop height and provides panoramic views of central Budapest from about 96 meters above ground level.
