St. Rumbold's Cathedral

St. Rumbold’s Cathedral is the principal Roman Catholic cathedral in Mechelen, Flanders, Belgium, and the seat of the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels. The building is a major Gothic monument in the city and is dominated by a tall tower that is visible across the surrounding plain.

The cathedral’s west tower, standing at about 97 metres, contains bells and a historic carillon which is used for scheduled peals and concerts; the tower contributes strongly to Mechelen’s skyline. The church interior comprises a Gothic nave, choir and multiple chapels with historical tombs and ecclesiastical furnishings.

Construction and additions to the cathedral took place across several centuries from the medieval period onward, resulting in the mix of Gothic styles visible today. The site has long been the focal point of Mechelen’s religious life and civic identity.

The cathedral is located in the historic centre of Mechelen, a short walk from the Grote Markt and other central landmarks, and is one of the city’s principal visitor attractions.
