St. Peter’s Square is the grand plaza immediately in front of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, redesigned by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the mid-17th century (1656-1667). The square is one of the most important ceremonial spaces of the Roman Catholic Church.

The design features an elliptical piazza embraced by sweeping colonnades, a central ancient Egyptian obelisk placed in the square in 1586, and two monumental fountains. The colonnades are arranged in four rows of Doric columns and are topped by a long sequence of statue figures.

The square functions as the main gathering place for papal audiences, major liturgical celebrations and public events, regularly holding large crowds for Easter, Christmas and papal blessings. Its scale and formal arrangement are intended to symbolically embrace the faithful.

St. Peter’s Square sits directly in front of St. Peter’s Basilica at the heart of Vatican City within central Rome, bounded by the basilica façade to the west and the colonnades opening toward the city.

What to See#

• Bernini’s colonnades: The sweeping elliptical colonnades conceived by Gian Lorenzo Bernini form two arms that embrace the square and are composed of four rows of Doric columns.
• Central obelisk: An ancient Egyptian obelisk stands at the centre of the square; it was moved to this position in 1586 and is set on a travertine plinth.
• Fountains: Two monumental fountains flank the obelisk-one by Maderno and a later companion by Bernini-providing focal points within the piazza.

The square is adjacent to the Vatican Museums and reachable on foot from Rome’s Prati or Borgo districts. From Ottaviano-San Pietro metro station (Line A), it’s a 10-15 minute walk. Security checkpoints are at the main approaches to the square; expect bag checks.

• Arrive before 7:00am to witness the square empty and hear the first clack of Vatican guards; security lines for St. Peter's Basilica form later in the morning.
• Stand on the central circular paving stone to experience the intended perspective that makes the colonnade seem like a single embracing arm.
• If attending a papal audience check the Vatican's official schedule and request tickets in advance through the Prefecture of the Papal Household.
• Avoid Sundays after Mass starts; the square fills with pilgrims and tour groups.
