St. Nicholas Cathedral
Church French-era cathedral in Đà Lạt with twin towers
On Đà Lạt’s central hill, St. Nicholas Cathedral (the ‘Chicken Church’) dates to French colonial times; tourists visit for its Romanesque façade, rooster-topped bell tower and hilltop views over the town.
St. Nicholas Cathedral is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Da Lat in Lam Dong province, Vietnam, completed in the early 1940s. It is the principal church of the local diocese and a landmark of Da Lat’s colonial-era architecture.
The cathedral is noted for its prominent bell tower topped by a weathercock, a feature that gave it the local nickname “Nhà thờ Con Gà.” The interior serves regular parish functions and the building sits prominently above the nearby city center, making it an easy walk from Xuan Huong Lake.
Construction took place under French colonial administration between 1931 and 1942, after which the building has served as the city’s main Catholic church. Over time it has remained in active liturgical use while also becoming a common stop for visitors to Da Lat.
The cathedral stands in central Da Lat on a gentle rise a few blocks from Xuan Huong Lake, within the city’s compact downtown area. It is pedestrian-accessible from the main hotel and market districts.
- Weathercock highlight: The church's bell tower is topped by a metal weathercock that gives the building its local nickname "Nhà thờ Con Gà" or "Chicken Church".
- Best times to visit: Sunday Mass and late-afternoon visits are the busiest times; the front plaza offers clear views of the façade and bell tower at sunset.
