St Michael’s Mount is a tidal island off the Cornish coast near Marazion in southwest England, crowned by a medieval castle and small settlement. The island is connected to the mainland by a causeway that is traversable at low tide.

The focal points are the hilltop castle complex, historic domestic buildings and cultivated terraced gardens on the lower slopes. The island also contains a small working harbour and a compact village of houses and narrow lanes, all visited on day trips from the mainland.

A monastic presence existed on the island in the medieval period and the site was later fortified; the castle and associated domestic buildings date from medieval and post-medieval phases. Ownership and stewardship have combined private tenancy and National Trust care in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The island sits in Mount’s Bay, off the town of Marazion and close to the larger town of Penzance on Cornwall’s southwest coast; it is a short drive from other Cornish tourist centres.

  • Tidal causeway: The island is tidal and is linked to the mainland by a causeway that is passable at low tide; the crossing is time-dependent so tide times matter for arrival and departure.
  • Views and gardens: The site combines historic architecture with cultivated gardens and provides panoramic views over Mount's Bay and the Cornish coast.

What to See #

  • The Castle: A medieval castle and domestic buildings that occupy the upper part of the island and include state rooms, defensive structures and exhibition spaces interpreting the site's history.
  • Gardens: Terraced subtropical gardens on the island's lower slopes that feature exotic plantings benefiting from the maritime climate.
  • Harbour and village: A small harbour and village clustered around the island's causeway end, with narrow streets and houses that serve visitors and residents.
