St. Michael's Church

St. Michael’s Church in Hildesheim is an early 11th-century Ottonian church built under Bishop Bernward and is celebrated for its architecture and medieval painted ceiling.

Commissioned and built in the early 11th century during the episcopate of Bernward of Hildesheim, the church served as a major religious and artistic centre in the Ottonian period and has retained or been restored to reflect much of its medieval character. It was recognised in the 20th century as part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing together with the nearby cathedral.

Located in the city of Hildesheim in Lower Saxony, northern Germany, the church lies about 30 kilometres south of Hanover and forms part of the city’s medieval core.
