The ensemble of St Mary’s Cathedral and St Michael’s Church in Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, are prominent examples of Ottonian and Romanesque architecture and medieval ecclesiastical art. The site was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1985.

St Michael’s Church was built in the early 11th century under Bishop Bernward, who was a major patron of the arts; St Mary’s Cathedral has origins in the early medieval bishopric with significant 11th- and 12th-century modifications. Both churches served as episcopal centres and repositories of art, and after severe wartime destruction in the 20th century they were restored following conservation principles.

The churches are located in the historic centre of Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, within walking distance of the town centre and are major features of the city’s medieval urban fabric.

• St Michael’s Church: St Michael’s Church is an early Romanesque basilica, built with a double-choir plan and well-known for its painted wooden ceiling and architectural symmetry dating from the 11th and 12th centuries.

Hildesheim’s St Mary’s Cathedral and St Michael’s Church are in the city centre. From Hannover take regional trains (RE) to Hildesheim Hauptbahnhof (about 30-40 minutes); from Hildesheim Hbf it is a walk of roughly 15-20 minutes (about 1-1.5 km) into the old town where the cathedral and church are located. Local buses and taxis also serve the city centre.

• Visit the cathedral early in the morning when the interior is quiet to study the Bernward Doors and the cathedral's Romanesque features before tour groups arrive.
• Buy a combined ticket or visit the nearby Dommuseum (Cathedral Museum) on the same visit-many visitors see the cathedral but miss the museum's medieval treasury and original works linked to the church's history.
• Check opening hours in advance and aim for weekdays outside major church feast days to avoid closures or large local crowds attending services.
