St. Michael’s Cave is a natural limestone show cave in the Rock of Gibraltar, within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. It is one of Gibraltar’s principal natural attractions.
The cave contains multiple chambers with extensive limestone formations and illuminated paths for public access. A large main chamber has been adapted for public events and concerts, with flat floor space and installed lighting. Short walks from the cave entrance lead to viewing points that look over the Bay of Gibraltar.
The cave has long been known locally and was developed for public visits in the 19th and 20th centuries; it has been used at times for exhibitions and musical performances. Military works and access paths on the Rock altered approaches to the cave during the 19th and 20th centuries.
The cave sits within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve on the Rock of Gibraltar, above the town of Gibraltar and overlooking the bay and the Strait of Gibraltar.
- Visitor access: The cave's interior is fitted with walkways and electric lighting and includes a large, naturally formed main chamber that is used for concerts and events.
- Geology: Located inside the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, the cave contains visible limestone formations including stalactites and stalagmites.
