St. Mary’s Church (Marienkirche) in Lübeck is a landmark Brick Gothic church dating mainly from the 13th century and a key monument of the Hanseatic city’s medieval centre. It has long been a focal point of Lübeck’s historic skyline.

The church’s high brick nave, large windows and Gothic proportions exemplify North German Brick Gothic architecture. Interior elements and memorials reflect the city’s maritime and Hanseatic heritage.

Construction began in the 13th century and the building developed over subsequent medieval centuries. The church suffered extensive damage during Allied bombing in 1942 and underwent major postwar restoration to conserve its Gothic fabric and historical appearance.

St. Mary’s stands in Lübeck’s Altstadt island, near the market square and other principal medieval streets, and is easily reached on foot from the city’s central transport hubs.
