St. Martin's Cathedral, Utrecht
Church Gothic cathedral dominating Utrecht's old city skyline
Utrecht’s St. Martin’s Cathedral anchors the old town beside the Dom Tower; tourists come for Dutch Gothic architecture, the vast nave, and the adjacent tower that dominates the city’s skyline and offers historic city views.
St. Martin’s Cathedral (Domkerk) is the medieval cathedral of Utrecht, the Netherlands, whose construction began in the 13th century and which includes the Netherlands’ tallest church tower.
The site is dominated by the Dom Tower, at 112.5 metres, and visitors come for the tower’s views and for the cathedral’s Gothic choir and chapels. The cathedral complex also includes the Domplein, the historic square surrounding the church.
Construction took place across the medieval period; the building was a major ecclesiastical centre. A violent storm in 1674 caused the nave to collapse, leaving the tower physically separated from the remaining choir and transept.
The cathedral stands at Domplein in the heart of Utrecht city centre, adjacent to the university precinct and about 30 km southeast of Amsterdam.
